These days, more than ever, we are hearing about scammers gaining access to individual’s bank accounts. At NZCU Central we want to help in any way we can to ensure that our members are safe from these criminals, so provided below are a few simple tips to make sure your money and information is as safe as possible.
- NZCU Central staff will never ask you for your PIN or your AccessOnline password
- Double check your bank statements for any activity that you don’t recognize as your own
- Be mindful of what information you send via email
- Be extra careful when using a public computer
EFTPOS and Debit cards
- Never share your PIN or passwords with anyone
- Don’t make your PIN something easy to guess (1234, your birth date, etc)
- Don’t write down your PIN or passwords either on paper or on a computer file
- Shelter your PIN when entering it at EFTPOS and ATM machines
- Keep EFTPOS and debit cards in a safe place
- Don’t give your debit card number out to anyone you don’t know and trust
- Be wary of any ATM or EFTPOS terminal that looks like it may have been tampered with
Shopping Online
- Don’t supply your debit card number or expiry date unless they are specifically required to purchase something
- Always check for a secure browser connection
- When buying something online, print a copy of the transaction for your own records
- Check reviews of online stores before purchasing goods from them, many online stores scam people by receiving payments and never sending the purchased items
Cheques
- Never pre-sign blank cheques
- Remember that a cash cheque can be cashed by whoever is holding it
- Always cross non-cash cheques as “NOT TRANSFERRABLE” and cross out “or bearer”
- Keep good records of the cheques you give out
When You're Overseas
- Never leave travel documents unattended
- Where possible, take advantage of safety deposit boxes or safes
- Consider the alternatives to carrying large amounts of cash (Cash Passport, debit card, etc)
- If you lose your debit card overseas, notify any bank displaying the MasterCard symbol, or notify us by calling +64 9 366 1028
